What Are Microorganisms?
Microorganisms (microbes) are tiny organisms not visible to the naked eye — found in pond water, soil, air, water, and even inside our bodies.

Viruses
Acellular and dependent. Viruses are microscopic but not made of cells (acellular). They can only multiply inside a living cell — and may cause disease when they do.

How Microbes Help: Decomposition
Breaking down, building up. Microorganisms decompose plant and animal waste into nutrient-rich manure, recycling nutrients back into the soil.

How Microbes Help: Nitrogen Fixation
Rhizobium and root nodules. Rhizobium bacteria live in the root nodules of legumes — beans, peas, lentils — and fix nitrogen straight from the air, enriching the soil naturally.

Yeast
This fungus respires and releases carbon dioxide, making bread dough rise.

Lactobacillus
This bacterium ferments milk into curd (producing lactic acid), and helps make idli and dosa batter.

Biogas
Without oxygen. Some bacteria decompose waste anaerobically (without oxygen), producing biogas — mainly methane and carbon dioxide — which is used as fuel.
